LAPTh, an overview

LAPTh is a mixed research unit (UMR 5108) of the CNRS lapth-lapp(within the Institute of Physics, INP) and the Université de Savoie. It is  located in Annecy-le-Vieux, 5km from the centre of Annecy and about 40km from CERN and Geneva.  The activities of LAPTh are centred around three main areas of research:

  • phenomenology of particle physics,
  • astroparticles and cosmology,
  • mathematical physics in particular field and string theory and  aspects of symmetry.

Fête de la Science 2014

FESTIVAL of SCIENCE 2014

On the occasion of the festival of science, LAPP and LAPTh will open their doors on  Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October  2014  from 10am to 18pm keeping up with this annual tradition.

We will make you discover more about  the experiments  carried at LAPP as well as the various activities both experimentalists and theorists (of LAPTh) are involved in.  Visitors will meet and interact with  physicists, engineers and technicians through different stands and stalls that represent the many research topics carried in our laboratories: Study of  the Higgs particle, the search for new particles at the LHC , anti-matter , cosmic rays  as well as the role of electronics, computers and mechanics in neutrino experiments, gravitational waves and the search for dark matter.

Dark Matter in the Front Line

francecultureFrance Culture in partnership with  Pour la Science magazine (French edition of Scientific American) invited  Richard Taillet from the LAPTh Astrophysics and Cosmology Team and Professor at Université de Savoie to talk  about Dark Matter Hunting in Underground Experiments. He reviewed the human challenges and the  technological infrastructure that are put in place today in the search of the missing dark matter of the universe. Thanks to more and  more precise instruments installed in old mines, physicists are searching for the elusive dark matter. With detector sensitivity  increasing the noose is tightening around this hypothetical component of the Universe ....

Listen to the radio programme  (Richard talks at 45 minutes into the programme)

GraSPA 2014

graspa2014 Summer School in Particle and Astroparticle physics of Annecy-le-Vieux, 21-25 July 2014

The school aims at introducing Particle Physics and Astroparticle physics to 4th and advanced 3rd year physics students from anywhere in the world. The most recent research topics and results in these fields will be presented. It consists of 4 days of lectures on LHC Physics, Neutrinos, Heavy Flavours, Astroparticle Physics, Gravitational Waves. Computational tools for these fields will also be introduced during a hands-on session. The students will be immersed in an international research atmosphere, and will be able to spend time and discuss at length with scientists working in the field.

Courses will be in English. No background knowledge on the topics covered beyond a popular science level is assumed. A strong basis in Quantum Mechanics is expected, however.
